Tips To Keep Your Air Conditioning Running Smoothly Through Summer

Admin • Sep 27, 2021

There’s nothing worse than having to brave the scorching summer of the Australian climate without the assistance of a working air conditioner. Unfortunately, this is a scenario that is a reality far too often and is one that can be avoided by taking the right steps and precautions in keeping your system in working order.

Our top tips:

Get your system serviced regularly

The best thing you can do for your air conditioning system is to get it serviced regularly to ensure that all parts are in working order. Due to the amount of time that air conditioners are used, particularly in the summer months, certain parts may need replacing and inner workings may need clearing out. Unless you service air conditioners for a living, you shouldn’t attempt to do this yourself as you could do more harm than good, even if you think you know what you are doing. If you’re unsure about how well your system is running, speak to a professional.

Adjust the temperature accordingly

One of the easiest ways to ensure that your system is working properly when you need it is to adjust the temperature by a few degrees, if you have the option to do so. While it feels spectacular to walk into a room that is a cool 15-degrees after working outside in the sweltering 40-degree sun, this will force your system to work much harder than if you were to set it just a few degrees higher. While it won’t be as cool inside, it will definitely be cool enough for you to be comfortable and won’t put unnecessary pressure on your system in the long run.

Ensure all ducts are clear

If you have a ducted system, you should ensure that all ducts are clean and clear of dust and dirt regularly, though especially in the summer months when the dry weather can kick up dust and dirt into the system. For the most part, external ducts are fairly easy to clean and won’t require additional services from a professional to keep your air conditioner in good working order. If you have cleaned your ducts and there is still an issue with airflow, it might be a good time to get your system serviced.

Keep blinds and shutters closed

While keeping windows cracked to allow for airflow while your air conditioner is on is a great way to ensure that your system works at its most efficient, it can also result in your system working overtime, especially if your blinds and shutters are also allowing direct sunlight into the house. Keeping your blinds and shutters closed on fronts that are exposed to direct sun, especially mid-morning and in the early evening, will ensure that your home doesn’t overheat necessarily and force your system to work harder than it needs to when keeping your house cool.

If you follow these few easy steps, there’s no reason why your air conditioner shouldn’t be running smoothly through the hot summer months and keeping your house and family cool and comfortable.
